Resettlement of Riverine Habitats Due to Forced Displacement: A Case of Bhagalpur, Bihar

Forcible relocation-related riverine habitat resettlement is a complicated problem with potentially big effects on the impacted people. To reduce the negative effects of relocation, this research has looked at the opportunities and difficulties related to resettlement and has emphasized the significance of thorough planning and consultation. Research has indicated that populations living along the river in Kahalgaon (Bhagalpur) frequently deal with floods and erosion. The many forms of displacement that have been examined include erosion-induced permanent displacement and transient movement during floods. The study uses geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing methods to create a flood risk map using the Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP), taking into account particular variables to determine which study area in Bhagalpur is most vulnerable (Colgong). The most susceptible Block (Colgong) is determined by the study using multicriteria decision analysis techniques such as AHP and TOPSIS (Technique for Order of Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution), considering characteristics depending on data availability. The significance of including impacted communities in the resettlement process through consultation and involvement is one of the research’s primary conclusions. This study has offered a thorough examination of the potential and difficulties related to relocation and has emphasized the significance of involving impacted communities in the consultation and resettlement process.
