Reverse Engineering of a Historic Motorcycle Cylinder Head Through 3D Scanning and Printing

This paper explores the reverse engineering process applied to the cylinder head of the historic Praga 500 BD motorcycle, employing contemporary industrial techniques, including 3D scanning and 3D printing. Initially, an optical 3D scanning device was used to create a model of the original part. However, distortions in proportions were identified, likely resulting from aging and insufficient modifications and repairs. Subsequently, adjustments to the obtained 3D model were made using Autodesk Fusion 360 software to rectify these distortions, aligning the part with the dimensions and shapes specified in the manufacturer's original technical drawings. The validated 3D model was then utilized to produce a 3D printed part using a PRUSA MK4 3D printer. This printed part served to verify physical dimensions and test its fit onto the engine cylinder to check dimensions and clearances. After these checks, the same part printed on the 3D printer will serve as a casting mould to produce the final metal part. The metal part is then machined.
