Training and Qualifications

NYA’s 2020 ‘Functional Map’ outlined six ‘Functional Areas’ of the then-current training structure, process and focuses. After significant falls in course and student numbers (partially recovered by 2023), its 2022 ‘Youth Workforce Development Strategy to 2027’ suggested at least two full-time equivalent qualified youth workers, four youth support workers and trained volunteers in each secondary school catchment area. In its response that year to the government’s Youth Guarantee, it also called for the recruitment and training of 10,000 qualified youth workers, 20,000 youth support workers and 40,000 volunteers. After reviewing the National Occupational Standards (NOS), youth work qualifying routes—supported by government-funded bursaries—were extended to include apprenticeships and new degree programmes, with NYA’s Academy also offering in-service training opportunities. However, emerging evidence suggested continuing difficulties in filling vacant posts.
