The article highlights a number of aspects concerning the legal status of the Republic of Abkhazia and its place in the modern international community. The authors seek to answer a number of questions concerning the legal personality of the Republic of Abkhazia. They also pay special attention to the issue of existence (or absence) of legal succession of the Republic of Abkhazia to the international treaties concluded by the Republic of Georgia. A brief historical reference is made to the process of secession of the Republic of Georgia from the USSR and the consequent severance of legal ties between Georgia and the Abkhaz ASSR. Next, a discussion on the modern legislative base of the Republic of Abkhazia in the field of private international law. A brief analysis of the current state of legislation in this field is given, indicating the existence of a number of international treaties with countries that have recognized the independence of the Republic of Abkhazia. At the same time, it is stressed that the Republic of Abkhazia, despite the absence of broad international legal recognition, seeks to establish relations with the international community and become a party to various international agreements in the field of both private international law and other branches of modern international communication.
