摘要

Cadmium (Cd) contamination presents grave environmental and human health risks, necessitating urgent remediation measures. This comprehensive chapter amalgamates insights from diverse sources, including studies on Cd’s impact on human health and plants, elucidating mechanisms of Cd action, and exploring remediation technologies along with their associated challenges. Cd exposure poses severe health risks to humans, manifesting in carcinogenic and nephrotoxic effects. Understanding Cd’s mechanisms of action on plants, including DNA and histone modification, sheds light on plant stress responses and tolerance mechanisms. Biotechnological interventions offer promising strategies for Cd removal, including bioaugmentation, biostimulation, and bioleaching. Phytoremediation emerges as an eco-friendly and cost-effective approach, leveraging hyperaccumulator plants’ ability to absorb and sequester Cd. However, challenges like limited hyperaccumulator availability and proper biomass disposal hinder its widespread application. Natural clays, particularly bentonite, exhibit high Cd adsorption capacities, making them effective remediation agents. Nonetheless, challenges such as adsorption of other elements and the need for periodic regeneration impede their efficiency. A multifaceted approach integrating biotechnological innovations, phytoremediation, and natural clay adsorption addresses these challenges. Biotechnology enhances Cd biodegradation, phytoremediation offers long-term remediation, and clay adsorption provides initial rapid Cd reduction. The urgency to optimize these techniques for large-scale deployment is underscored by Cd’s detrimental health effects and environmental persistence. Further research is crucial to develop cost-effective strategies for biomass management and clay regeneration, ensuring comprehensive and sustainable Cd mitigation solutions. By synergizing biotechnological advancements, phytoremediation, and natural clay adsorption, we can effectively combat Cd contamination, safeguarding both environmental integrity and human well-being.
