Split Plots

A split-plot design is a special case of a factorial treatment structure. It is used when some factors are harder or difficult to change during the experiment than others. In a split-plot design, the main factor levels are randomly assigned o large plots, while the second factor levels are assigned to smaller subplots within the main plots. This allow studying the effect of the second factor while controlling variability within the main plots. Likewise in other experimental designs, replication is important in split-plot designs to enhance the precision of treatment effect estimates. Moreover, split-plot design can be implemented in an RCD, RCBD, IBD or LS, with all randomization restrictions. One of the key features to recognize is that split plots have more than one randomization depending on the number of factors in studying and more than one experimental unit.
