This chapter delves into the essential methods for assessing eye movements and underlying physiological mechanisms. Subjective measurements, reliant on patient communication, contrast with objective techniques, which necessitate patient cooperation without verbal interaction. Objective measurements encompass eye movement tracking and anatomical assessments, utilizing diverse techniques from clinical observations to advanced imaging modalities. Electro-oculography (EOG) monitors bipotentials to evaluate retinal function, while scleral search coils (SSC) offer high-resolution 3D tracking but pose challenges in practical application. Infrared-oculography and 3D video-oculography (VOG) present non-invasive alternatives with superior accuracy and versatility. Physiologic muscle force measurements provide insights into muscle function, aiding in diagnostics and treatment planning for various ocular conditions. Despite challenges like technical limitations and interpretation nuances, these measurement techniques collectively contribute to a comprehensive understanding of ocular physiology and pathology.
