‘Smooth’ Queenship: Philippa as Lancastrian Aristocrat, Queen of Portugal and Mother of Princes (1387–1415)

Philippa Plantagenet, born to John of Gaunt and Blanche of Lancaster, lived a privileged upbringing in her youth in England. Raised in various Lancastrian manors, Philippa grew up in a cultured environment, exposed to talented poets and writers through her father’s patronage of the arts. When she became queen of Portugal in 1387, Philippa introduced reforms to the royal court, including changes to religious practices, and governed over her own domain of six towns. Philippa played a key role in the education of her children. Her progeny included notable figures such as Henry, the Navigator and Isabel, Duchess of Burgundy.
