Hurried Professionals: Sociology in Latvia

Sociology in Latvia has historically been an applied discipline, focusing on research driven by practical interests and issues. However, the impact of sociologists on public discourse and policy has been limited, drawing attention to the conditions and professional considerations that shape the conduct of Latvian sociologists and influence their ability to contribute to public debate and challenge dominant discourses about their areas of expertise. Based on historical accounts of the development of sociology in Latvia, analysis of print media and interviews with Latvian sociologists, this chapter argues that financial uncertainty and a commitment to professionalism have significantly shaped the ability and willingness of sociologists to actively engage in public discourse and drive societal transformation. Challenging dominant ways of framing issues or providing alternative lenses through which to interpret social phenomena, other than in a research capacity, has seldom been part of the agenda.
