Seaweed as a Novel Feed Resource Including Nutritional Value and Implication Product Quality Animal Health

According to the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs’ world population prospects, 2019 revision, the current world population of 7.7 billion is expected to reach 8.5 billion in 2030 (10% increase), 9.7 billion in 2050 (26% increase) and 10.9 billion in 2100 (42% increase) (UNDESA 2019). This represents a challenge to providing food for a growing population, but the cultured meat industry and technology have not yet proven the capability to work out major upcoming problems with food security and the environment when meat demands (Post and Hocquette 2017; Henchion et al. 2021). Feeding a balanced diet with all nutrients is essential for high and sustainable livestock production. However, it seems challenging to supply high-quality feed (and fodder) and negatively impact food crops such as corn and soybean (Ayele et al. 2021). Thus, this will make competition between animal feed and human food plus biofuel production. Hence, macro algae, commonly named seaweed or marine algae are one of the best alternatives for conventional animal feed (Makkar et al. 2016).
