Seaweeds Polyphenolic Compounds: A Marine Potential for Human Skin Health

The potential health benefit effects of seaweed polyphenolic compounds for human skins are getting more recognition. Currently, seaweed polyphenolic compounds with health benefit claims have been applied in skincare and cosmetic products available in the market. In addition, seaweed derived polyphenolics such as phlorotannins and mycosporine-like amino acids (MAAs) exhibit a variety of skin-protective capabilities such as antioxidant, anti-photoaging, matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) inhibitor, anti-acne, and anti-tyrosinase. This contribution objective is to present an extensive insight into the seaweed phenolic compounds, specifically phlorotannins and MAAs, provide critical understanding about the ongoing and prospective status of these compounds, headlining the prospective activities for human skins, industrial applications, and also the possibility to develop into new products.
