Technological Influence on the Measurement of Quality of Life in Persons with Autism Spectrum Disorder

Quality of life (QoL) is a complex, multidimensional concept shaped by cultural context and values. This study explores the intersection of QoL, technology, and mental health, particularly in persons affected by Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Although there is a certain stigma towards the technologies, there is evidence of the potential benefits of social robots and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, in improving the well-being of individuals with ASD. This research employs a multi-methodological approach, utilizing data from the Survey of Disability, Personal Autonomy, and Dependency Situations conducted by the National Institute of Statistics in Spain. The study involves a questionnaire analysis focusing on the perceived health status and technology impact on persons with ASD, Chronic Anxiety (CA), and Chronic Depression (CD). Furthermore, an agent-based model using NetLogo software is applied to simulate and analyze the factors influencing the QoL of people with ASD. The model incorporates a “small world” phenomenon by considering the interconnectedness of risk variables. The results from both questionnaire analysis and agent-based modeling provide insights into the factors affecting QoL about persons affected by ASD. The findings suggest the importance of a multi-methodological strategy in designing technology tailored to the unique needs of individuals with ASD. The agent-based Artificial Intelligence (AI) model proves valuable in understanding and optimizing interventions, offering the potential for personalized strategies to enhance the well-being of ASD patients.
