Introduction: Why Interrogate the Concept of Merit

Laying out the framework of the argument contained in the chapters of the book, this chapter establishes the modes of meritocratic judgment that are witnessed in academic knowledge production. The chapter expresses the need to interrogate Merit as a political concept in academia and the role political theory plays in understanding that application of power.
