Relatives Are Coming Forward
摘要
The first successes of Turing’s bombe came at a special moment. With the end of French campaign, the number of messages intercepted by British signals intelligence significantly decreased. German troops installing themselves in France have quickly switched to wire communications. After the Battle of the Beams came to an end functioning of Hut 6 has taken on a somewhat routine character. The Herivel method and the cillies still worked well, allowing to break the Luftwaffe keys within a few hours. The codebreakers were prepared for the elimination of errors both methods were based on; bombes were waiting on standby. However, the proficiency in breaking German messages achieved by BP in the second half of 1940 was becoming less and less applicable. Contrary to the scarce material provided by Wehrmacht and Luftwaffe, British listening stations were intercepting a growing number of Kriegsmarine signals, as German ships installed themselves at bases on French and Norwegian coasts. Their abundance has become more of a source of frustration than satisfaction; at that time Hut 8 has not yet mastered the subtleties of the Kriegsmarine Enigma. At the turn of 1940–1941 most frontlines were either closed or have been stagnating. In this situation the secondary until then theatres of war were gaining importance, and it turned out that the military Enigma had a bunch of relatives. They remained in the shadow of the more famous sister, but when her dominant tone was missing, their less resonant volume could be heard.
