摘要

Joint problem-solving is a powerful tool for leaders, managers and union representatives to use, bringing pragmatic and practical solutions to real workplace problems. It does not bypass consultation or negotiation but can be used alongside these if the environment is conducive and some core conditions are in place. Problem-solving requires trust, a structured approach and different skills and behaviours from traditional win-lose negotiation. It can be used to resolve specific operational, and people challenges, or to signify a new way of working after conflict. The use of practical examples in the chapter demonstrate how problem-solving can help resolve differences of opinion, moving people on from entrenched positions. If it becomes a natural way of working, problem-solving can positively impact organisational and employment relations culture, giving employee representatives a genuine voice at work. It can lead to sustainable change which is better understood and accepted as both parties have shaped the solution. There can be obstacles, and this practical chapter discusses how these can be overcome.
