Adapting to Adaptation: Methodological Support for Multiscalar Adaptation of the Venice Lagoon

The impacts of climate change and the increasing frequency of resulting extreme events in recent years have given rise to significant environmental, societal, and economic repercussions in a delicate and highly susceptible region such as Venice. Precisely from this perspective, which considers areas particularly vulnerable to the effects of the climate, the “Venezia2021” scientific research program is included, coordinated by CORILA—Consortium for coordinating research relating to the Venice lagoon system. The research in question involves a complex process of identification and integration of innovative tools, data processing and analysis, and evaluation of impacts, to contribute to maintaining a correct balance of the lagoon ecosystem in a perspective of greater climate resilience. The general objective of the research was to build a strategic, accurate, and shared vision of the challenges that await the protection of the city and its lagoon (a world heritage site), in consideration of climate change scenarios. Specifically, this contribution analyzes the research experience of thematic axis n.5 which led to the drafting of the Climate Change Adaptation Plan for the Venice lagoon. The operational path that led to the construction of the plan was guided by an in-depth territorial study and development of an integrated system of analysis, evaluation, planning, management, and monitoring of the Venetian area capable of supporting the city and the activities that operate through coordinated adaptation actions aimed at increasing sustainability and resilience. This plan represents a model of how communities can work together to address the challenges of climate change. This integrated approach, based on solid scientific data and active stakeholder involvement, could be and become the basis for future adaptation plans in other vulnerable areas. This is because the plan development process demonstrated the effectiveness of a multidisciplinary approach, integrating scientific data, socio-economic analysis, and stakeholder involvement. Initially, detailed scientific analyses were conducted on the vulnerability of the Venice Lagoon to climate change, focusing on heat waves and flooding. These analyses provided a solid basis for understanding climate risks and the specific challenges faced by territories. It represents an example of how interdisciplinarity, participation of local communities, and collaboration with stakeholders can contribute to creating sustainable solutions to address the impacts of climate change in other similar regions. The lesson learned from this experience is that preparation and planning are key to increasing climate resilience and protecting vulnerable territories.
