Proposed Solutions

This chapter examines the various approaches to mitigating the ransomware menace, emphasizing the need for global cooperation and innovative security methodologies. The profitability and ease of distribution of ransomware pose significant challenges, prompting the exploration of six potential solutions ranked by their feasibility and effectiveness. Establishing international norms and enhanced cooperation, including extradition agreements, stands out as a primary strategy, albeit contingent upon broad international agreements, which remains elusive due to varying national interests. Hardware solutions offer a technical countermeasure by detecting abnormal encryption activities, while adopting zero-trust architectures promises to reduce network vulnerabilities by enforcing strict access controls and segmentation. Additionally, reducing the profitability of ransomware through improved cybersecurity practices and considering the controversial steps of banning cryptocurrencies and ransom payments are discussed. The latter is likened to measures against kidnapping and maritime piracy and could decisively undercut ransomware operations but faces ethical, legal, and practical hurdles. This chapter underscores the complexity of combating ransomware and advocates for a comprehensive and collaborative approach that balances immediate protective measures with long-term deterrent strategies.
