Business Impacts of Ransomware

This chapter comprehensively examines ransomware’s the impact of ransomware on organizations, highlighting the human factor as a critical element in ransomware attacks and defending against them. Ransomware, described as a pervasive threat to society, is operated by organized groups aiming for profitability, akin to business entities, and relies heavily on human decisions at various stages, from execution by operators and affiliates to the responses of victims. Chapter 4 includes a survey conducted between October and December 2020, involving participants from diverse roles and industries to investigate attitudes toward ransomware. This study revealed significant insights, such as the prevalence of incident response plans among organizations, albeit with a notable percentage lacking specific plans for ransomware. Surprisingly, none of the surveyed organizations had reserved cryptocurrency for ransom payments, contrasting with earlier reports suggesting a trend of stockpiling cryptocurrency as a preparative measure against ransomware attacks. The findings underscore the complex interplay of preparation, decision-making, and response strategies in mitigating ransomware risks. Additionally, the study explores the varied impacts of ransomware across sectors, emphasizing the vulnerability of small to medium-sized businesses (SMBs), the education sector, and healthcare, as well as the challenges managed service providers (MSPs) face. It concludes with an overview of relevant laws and regulations, highlighting the legal landscape surrounding ransomware payments and the evolving strategies to combat this form of cybercrime.
