The Three Cs of Ransomware

  • Harry Halikias

摘要

In this chapter, we introduce the “Three Cs of Ransomware,” a novel conceptual framework designed to unpack the potency and profitability of ransomware attacks. By examining Cryptography, Cryptocurrency, and Customer Service, we reveal how these components collectively contribute to the success of ransomware operations. Cryptography ensures data is encrypted and inaccessible, and thus central to the extortion process, while Cryptocurrency enables anonymous financial transactions that are difficult to trace, facilitating the payment of ransoms. The aspect of Customer Service highlights the evolution of ransomware into a sophisticated business model that includes ransomware as a Service (RaaS), enhancing the efficiency of these criminal enterprises. This framework sheds light on the mechanisms that make ransomware a formidable cybersecurity challenge and emphasizes the interconnectedness of these elements in ensuring the success and profitability of ransomware attacks. Through this analysis, the chapter aims to provide a deeper understanding of the strategic operation of ransomware and the critical areas for defensive strategies. This chapter aims to show how ransomware gangs use cryptography and cryptocurrency with a touch of customer service.
