Originating with the 1989 AIDS Trojan, ransomware has evolved from simplistic schemes to sophisticated operations leveraging cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin for untraceable transactions. This chapter delves into the ransomware threat landscape, illustrating its progression from data-locking to data exfiltration techniques, notably highlighted by the Maze ransomware’s introduction of double extortion. Through the lens of the Lockheed Martin Cyber Kill Chain and comparisons with other malicious activities, this chapter assesses ransomware’s unique position in the cyber threat hierarchy and its operational tactics, including the use of publicly available tools for significant financial gain.
