The Role of Learning Factories in Validating and Marketing AI Technologies: A Case Study on Overcoming Industrial Rollout Challenges

In today’s industrial landscape, there exists a challenge of successfully introducing innovative technical solutions into the market. The Innovation & Learning Center Aachen presents a case study, how learning factories can serve as pivotal actors in assisting technology providers in validating and marketing their AI products. The problem space under investigation in this study entails the successful implementation of a technical solution yet encountering obstacles in its further rollout into the industry. The AI supplier faces several challenges: a lack of client base in the target industry, limited expertise in understanding the industry’s specific needs, and an insufficient grasp of industry-specific knowledge, all contributing to difficulties in customer acquisition, network building, and capitalizing on market potential. The solution approach involves collaborating with technology providers within the learning factory network, adapting the technical solution to meet the requirements of learning factories, presenting the solution to learning factory customers to ensure product-market fit, and aligning the technology provider’s business model with learning factory demands. This necessitates the development of industry specific expertise, AI expertise as well as enhanced sales capabilities. The central outcomes of these efforts encompass the design of a Minimum Viable Product (MVP), the implementation in an MVP project, the definition of a strategic partnership, and the development of a commercial toolkit for effective customer engagement. A forward-looking perspective highlights the planned validation, rollout, and expansion of the solution. This pathway allows for bridging the gap between technical innovation and industrial implementation and underscores the pivotal role of learning factories.
