Development of Experiential Learning Framework for Autonomous Vehicle Education

摘要

This paper presents the creation and utilization of a Modular Autonomous Mobile Robot Platform (MAMRP), strategically designed to enhance experiential learning in the realms of automation and automotive engineering. The primary emphasis lies in delving into autonomous vehicle topics within the framework of McMaster University’s Learning Factory. The MAMRP serves as an educational tool aimed at providing students with a step-by-step approach to comprehending complex concepts related to autonomous vehicles. The curriculum emphasizes critical areas such as autonomous vehicle software architecture, sensors and perception, control systems, and localization and mapping. The modular design of MAMRP allows students to integrate and test each module individually, ensuring a progressive and comprehensive understanding of autonomous vehicle technologies. By engaging with practical exercises on the MAMRP, students gain hands-on experience and a deeper insight into the intricate workings of autonomous vehicles, preparing them for the challenges of this rapidly evolving field. This pioneering method of experiential learning serves to enrich theoretical understanding while nurturing essential practical skills vital for aspiring professionals in automotive engineering and autonomous systems. Encouragingly, a cohort of 20 graduate-level students has provided highly satisfactory feedback regarding this approach.
