Assessment of Sustainable Development Goal 5 in Relation to Challenges Women Face in the Building Construction Industry in the Eastern Region Comparative Analysis

Purpose: The construction industry has traditionally been dominated by men. Nevertheless, SDG Goal 5 seeks to promote gender equality in fields traditionally dominated by men. This paper seeks to assess SDG 5 in relation to the challenges women face in the building construction industry in the Eastern Region. Design/Methodology/Approach: In order to create a questionnaire to verify the study’s goals, a literature analysis was used to identify 12 obstacles that women face when working in the building construction industry. 150 construction experts from the Eastern Region, including architects, project managers, site engineers, and site supervisors, were chosen at random. To sample these respondents, random and purposive sampling approaches were used. Findings: The outcome of the study indicate that the most challenging situations women face when engaging in building construction work in the Eastern Region of Ghana are lack of fear of progressing in a male-dominated field, comparison between capacities of sexes, worksite security, wage equity among sexes, lack of incentives to encourage women in the industry, and unhealthy sites. Practical Implications: The study’s conclusions suggest that, in order to speed the attainment of the SDG 5 as a developing country, the government should adopt policies that promote women to participate in activities that are typically done by men. This study focuses solely on the representation of women in the Eastern regions’ building construction business. Originality and Value: The research may be fascinating to stakeholders in building construction who are championing the inclusion of women in the building construction industry. Since studies on women’s participation in building construction work are limited in the Eastern Region of Ghana, the study contributes to the literature on challenges women face when involved in building construction work in Ghana.
