Assessing Awareness, Positive Effects, and Implementation Challenges of Green Construction Procurement in Accra, Ghana

Purpose: The study aims to assess the awareness, positive effects, and implementation challenges of green construction procurement in Ghana. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study used a quantitative research approach. A structured questionnaire for the study was designed from the literature review and administered to contractors, procurement officers, project managers, and construction managers in the Greater Accra region due to the level of advanced construction in the region. Both purposive and snowball sampling methods were used in this study to obtain a valid and effective overall sample size. The question was disseminated through google forms. Seventy-five were retrieved and used for the analysis of the study. The statistical tools used for analysis are frequency, percentages, and mean scores. Findings: The findings revealed some of the challenges to the level of awareness of green construction procurement: Lack of information about the real environmental impacts of the products, Cost of training on green construction procurement, and Lack of clear definition and evaluation criteria for green construction procurement as a barrier. Obstacles to the Implementation of Green Construction Procurement; Lack of enforcement by the government to implement green construction procurement, long procedure to implement green construction procurement, and Lack of practical tools and information. Green construction procurement may have favorable effects on the environment and human health, increases profitability, and positively affects the environment, etc. Practical implications: The conclusions of the research may be useful to the government at different institutional levels. Understanding the obstacles may help policymakers adopt green construction procurement. Similarly, the study may assist field actors reframe their interests and values in order to increase policy awareness. Originality and Value: The study contributes to barriers to the implementation of green construction procurement whiles assessing the awareness level and positive effect of green construction procurement.
