Barriers to Implementing Green Building Projects in Higher Education Institutions in Nigeria: Evidence from Stakeholders

Purpose: High energy consumption by higher education institutions (HEIs) structures may enhance air pollution, flooding, and land degradation. These hazardous environmental problems can be mitigated or prevented in a green environment. This study investigated the encumbrances facing green practices in Nigerian HEIs and suggested measures to promote green HEIs buildings. Design/ Methodology/ Approach: The investigators employed a qualitative method through virtual interviews and were complemented with academic literature to achieve the study’s aim. The research engaged eighteen interviewees by a convenient sampling technique and achieved saturation. The study employed a thematic approach to analyse the data. Findings: Results reveal that Nigerian HEIs’ green construction project is low and pronounced in many HEIs. Findings clustered the identified issues hindering implementation initiatives into six main clusters. This includes stakeholders’ behaviour, design team, technical, financial, organisation, and government issues. Results reveal that proffering policies and programmes to address these issues may promote Nigerian HEIs’ green construction. Social Implications: This study will stir stakeholders, especially policymakers, to green initiatives of HEIs via policies tailored towards implementing green construction projects in Nigerian HEIs. Originality and Value: It ensures minimal negative environmental impact and enhances optimum economic, social, and environmental benefits. The outcome would lead to significant performance, better productivity, and construction sustainability to bridge the infrastructural gap in HEIs.
