Antimicrobial Activity Evaluation of Pigment Extracts from Pigmented Bacteria Isolated from Poultry Faecal Wastes in Ikorodu, Lagos Metropolis

Purpose: The present investigation aimed to isolate and characterize pigmented bacteria from agro-industrial wastes (poultry waste) and to evaluate the antimicrobial potentials of their pigment extract against some selected disease-causing bacteria. Methodology: Fifty (50) poultry faecal wastes were collected from five (5) different poultry farms in Ikorodu Lagos, grown on nutrient agar (NA) and starch casein agar (SCA). Pigmented colonies were selected and molecular characterization of the pigment-producers was performed using 16S rRNA sequencing while extraction of pigment was done using acidified ethanol. The antibacterial property of the extracted pigments was evaluated and data statistically analyzed. Findings: Four different pigment-producing isolates were obtained and identified as Bacillus subtilis (FEP1), Exiguobacterium sp. (SPF1), Alcaligenes sp. (LPP2) and Micrococcus sp. (EPF), with red, orange, purple and yellow pigments produced by them respectively. Pigment extract of SPF1 at concentrations of 120 µl/ml was found effective against all the test organisms while FEP1 was active against three organisms. LPP2 and EPF showed activity against two test organisms each. Practical Implications: Poultry faecal wastes are source of bio-pigments. It was concluded that pigments from bacteria strains FEP1, SPF1, LPP2, and EPF have antimicrobial potential and could be beneficial in medicine as possible alternatives to chemical antimicrobials. Social Implications: Healthy environment is crucial to our existence. Utilization of poultry faecal waste in industrial production of pigment for dyes and medicinal values will enhance better management of poultry wastes. Originality and Value: This study contributed to the economic diversification of poultry faecal wastes from just farm manure to sources of bacteria pigment of novel antimicrobials.
