The Transformative Outlook of the Local Woven Fugu Cloth in Ghana

Purpose: The study presents the formation of the local Ghanaian Fugu woven cloths, its Traditional Clothing Construction: methods, and changes derived from traditional dressing forms (draping). It further illustrates modern designs that originated from local costume, which still reveals the country’s values and traditional beauty. Design/Methodology/Approach: The study employed a qualitative descriptive approach in documenting the fugu traditional formative processes, constructional skills while exhibiting variations of designs through modifications of fugu cloth. The research instruments engaged were observation and content analyses. Data obtained from the examined clothing were analysed and presented for discussion. Findings: due to its colour appeal, Ghanaian Fugu woven cloth has become a national asset extensively patronized locally and globally. The traditional apparel has finally made its way from Ghana's royal palace to the worldwide market. Designers are consequently urged to use new ways of adapting this cultural pride into more lucrative business operations to attract more customers. Research Limitation: The study focused on the innovation and transformation of the Ghanaian traditional Fugu woven cloth, with main focus on weaving, designing, and construction. Implying the various modern transformative trends of the local cloth gives it more value, a process that brings about national and international patronage of cloth for the country's economic growth. However, this study did not discuss the design and construction of costumes. Practical Implication: The knowledge acquired draws more attention to the possible innovative transformation of the local woven cloth. This prompts designers to pay attention to the construction of traditional clothes for the high market. Tracing the transformation trends would help improve the clothing industry's design mode for global patronage. Social Implication: This study's advancement of knowledge of the local woven cloth gives more value to the cloth, which would subsequently boost the confidence of wearers in the local and international community. The clothing construction industry would maximise profit through the continued transformation of the cloth. Originality/Value: The trace of the evolvements of traditional costumes and subsequent knowledge in fabric, apparel designing, and colour coordination unravel various creativity techniques in transforming local clothing into more acceptable ones.
