A Review of Sustainable Banana Fibre Production and Usage in West Africa

Purpose: This study aims to explore the potential of banana fiber production in West Africa as a sustainable alternative to synthetic fibers. It examines the environmental benefits of banana fiber products, such as biodegradability and durability, along with their potential economic impact on rural communities. Design/Methodology/Approach: Through an extensive review of existing literature and studies, this analysis presents an overview of the benefits and challenges associated with banana fiber production in West Africa. It evaluates the biodegradability, strength, moisture-wicking properties, and potential health benefits of banana fiber products. The study also addresses the obstacles hindering the industry's growth, such as lack of infrastructure and competition from synthetic fibers. Findings: Banana fiber products offer a range of ecological advantages due to their biodegradability, strength, moisture management, and potential health benefits. Furthermore, the sector has the potential to provide economic growth and employment opportunities for rural populations. Despite challenges, such as infrastructural limitations and competition from synthetic counterparts, strategic investments in research, technology, and infrastructure could overcome these barriers and facilitate the expansion of the banana fiber industry in West Africa. Research Limitation: This study's scope is limited to the available literature and research up to the current date. Future research could delve into emerging technologies, market dynamics, and policy implications to provide a more comprehensive understanding. Practical Implication: The findings underscore the feasibility of establishing a robust and sustainable banana fiber industry in West Africa, benefiting both the economy and the environment. By investing in research, technology, and infrastructure, policymakers and stakeholders can pave the way for a thriving sector that capitalizes on the region's abundant banana resources. Originality/Value: This study contributes to the understanding of the potential benefits of banana fiber production in West Africa, highlighting its economic and environmental significance.
