Exploring Household Natural Gas Consumption Patterns in Nigeria: A Case Study of Ado Ekiti

Purpose: This research aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of household gas consumption patterns in Ado Ekiti, Nigeria, focusing on factors influencing adoption, challenges, and benefits of gas as a primary energy source. The total population of Ado Ekiti is 535,916. Design/Methodology/Approach: A descriptive research design was adopted, utilizing a structured questionnaire to survey households in both urban and rural areas of Ado Ekiti. A sample size of 384 questionnaire were distributed to participants and was determined through the “Roasoft sample size calculator” ensuring a representative subset of the total population. But only 381 filled questionnaires were valid for data analysis. Findings: Out of 381 households surveyed, a significant majority (70%) used gas primarily for cooking (89%). Key reasons for gas adoption include affordability, convenience, and efficiency. While accessibility to gas infrastructure was reported as moderate to easy by most respondents, 27% indicated areas with a lack of access. Influential factors on gas consumption encompassed affordability, awareness, accessibility, the availability of alternative fuels, and environmental considerations. Practical Implications: For a broader adoption of gas as a primary energy source, there is a need to introduce subsidies making gas affordable, particularly for low-income households. Enhancing gas infrastructure, especially in rural areas, and initiating awareness campaigns tailored for different communities are crucial. Social Implications: Promoting the benefits and safe use of gas has the potential to improve the quality of life for Nigerian households, reducing reliance on traditional biomass fuels. Such a transition can lead to a reduction in health risks, deforestation, and environmental degradation. Originality and Value: While several studies have explored energy consumption in Nigeria, this research uniquely focuses on the intricacies of household gas consumption in Ado Ekiti. This study offers valuable insights for policymakers, energy providers, and stakeholders looking to optimize sustainable energy solutions tailored for specific Nigerian demographics.
