Ultrasound Phantoms for Thyroid RFA

Thyroid radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is a complex procedure necessitating multiple competencies, including a thorough understanding of cervical ultrasound anatomy and specific technical skills. Training on ultrasound phantoms allows for safe and repeated practice, enhancing procedural competency. Commercially available phantoms can be expensive and often unsuitable for RFA training due to heat produced by the electrode during energy delivery. We detail a protocol for creating an inexpensive, easy-to-prepare, and realistic gel-matrix ultrasound phantom for thyroid RFA training. Using common ingredients and equipment, this phantom closely approximates live tissue ultrasonography, provides realistic haptic feedback, and withstands heat produced during practice sessions. A mock “nodule” created from pork loin offers excellent visualization and post-practice examination, allowing trainees to assess the effectiveness of their mock ablation.
