Ethanol Ablation of Thyroid Nodules

  • Dong Wook Kim

摘要

This chapter examines Ethanol Ablation (EA) for thyroid nodules, emphasizing its safety, efficacy, and procedural guidelines. Initially used for thyroid cysts, EA has expanded to include treatment for predominantly cystic nodules, with its utility in solid and hyperfunctioning nodules still under scrutiny. The procedure involves injecting ethanoldirectly into the nodule to induce necrosis and shrinkage. While effective for benign cystic nodules, offering symptom relief and cosmetic improvement, its role in managing solid nonfunctioning or hyperfunctioning nodules and malignant nodules is more limited, with alternative treatments such as thermal ablation often preferred. It highlights the critical role of selecting appropriate patients, executing the procedure with precision, and conducting thorough follow-up to achieve optimal results and reduce the risk of complications.
