Financial Considerations in Developing Thyroid RFA Services

  • Seung Kwon Kim

摘要

Thyroid nodule radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is an effective and well-established treatment option for reducing and eliminating benign thyroid nodules. Compared to thyroidectomy, RFA offers several advantages, including improved patient satisfaction, better postoperative quality of life, shorter hospital stays, and cost reduction. However, despite its benefits, the widespread adoption of thyroid nodule RFA in the United States has been hindered by reimbursement issues, as there is currently no specific Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) code for this procedure. Additionally, limited awareness among both the public and physicians contributes to its underutilization. Establishing a thyroid RFA service line can address these challenges by providing a noninvasive alternative to thyroidectomy, offering patients a viable treatment option, and generating revenue for the hospital.
