Volume Measurements of Thyroid Nodules Following RFA

Benign thyroid nodules (BTNs) treated with thermal ablation (TA) show distinct post-treatment changes, including an ablated region and a viable peripheral area. After TA, nodules temporarily increase in volume due to hemorrhage and edema, followed by a reduction as the ablated tissue is absorbed. Ultrasound imaging monitors these changes by measuring total nodule volume (Vt), ablated volume (Va), and viable volume (Vv). The initial ablation ratio (IAR) is a key predictor of treatment success, and an increase in Vv can indicate early nodule regrowth before changes in Vt are observed. These metrics are essential for effective follow-up and long-term management of TA-treated BTNs.
