The Case of Heineken and Leaving Russia During the Ukrainian War

On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine and began a horrible war with over 200,000 deaths, including many civilian casualties, eight million people fleeing and many human rights violations.Heineken announced on March 9, 2022, that it ‘will stop the production, advertising and sale of the Heineken-brand in Russia’. However, one year later, on February 21 2023, the investigative journalism platform Follow the Money published an article titled ‘Heineken breaks promise and still invests in Russia’, sparking widespread public indignation. Subsequently, Heineken’s reiterated their dedication to terminate their activities in Russia ‘in the right way’, with care for their local 1,800 employees.
