A Five-Step Ethical Decision-Making Model

The Greek philosopher Socrates was known for his quest for truth and knowledge. With his statement, ‘wisdom begins with wonder’, he meant that asking questions and wondering why the world is as it is, is the first step in the process of gaining wisdom. Various disciplines and scholars have developed multiple frameworks to guide individuals and organisations in navigating moral dilemmas. These models often share common elements, such as identifying the ethical issue, considering the stakeholders involved, evaluating the options from multiple ethical perspectives, deciding, and reflecting on the outcome. This book introduces a ‘Moral Considerations Matrix’, a tool designed to delve deeper into the ethical implications of each option. The Moral Considerations Matrix emphasises the deontological (principles) and utilitarian (consequences) moral responsibilities of directors, so that directors can ensure that their actions are not only morally sound but also socially responsible, leading to outcomes that are ethically justifiable and broadly supported. This entails a careful balancing of the interests of various stakeholders, offering a more nuanced understanding of the ethical landscape surrounding the decision-making process. This dual approach facilitates a deeper understanding of the moral landscape, enabling a more nuanced and informed decision-making process that respects ethical principles while striving for fairness and equity among all stakeholders.
