Conclusion: Towards Inclusive Design

This final chapter raises a number of issues about different ways of seeing the justice system and technological transformation. Focusing on the needs of the most disadvantaged users of the legal system, we ask a series of questions about the ways in which the mindset of architects of online justice systems and content providers can be seen as biased. The chapter argues that this is due in large part to a failure to take into account the needs and opinions of public users of a public justice system in the design, testing and implementation of online services. Drawing on concepts of participatory design we outline the various ways in which the creation of new knowledge through interacting with the general public constitutes a form of democratic and responsible design.
