With the appointment of Alice Dewey as principal in 1901, the school’s atmosphere became increasingly tense, the democratic school management was abolished, and the educational concept was called into question. The decline accelerated as the competitor, Parkers practice school, moved onto the university campus and succeeded in taking over the school’s original name (University Elementary School), forcing the Dewey School to adopt a new one (Laboratory School).
