After Parker’s death in 1902, Dewey took over the directorship of the School of Education and seized the opportunity to save his perpetually underfunded school by merging it with the former Parker school. When Dewey appointed his wife as principal of the unified school, opposition from all sides ensued. In 1904, Alice Dewey was forced to resign, which led to the Deweys leaving the University of Chicago in anger.
