Remitted Visibility for Ireland

  • Margaret Haverty

摘要

This chapter delves into the notion of “visibility remittances”—how the Irish diaspora in Germany enhances the global presence and portrayal of Ireland. It examines the political and social ramifications of such visibility, including aspects of representation, voice, and identity constructions. Furthermore, this chapter addresses the theme of ‘resisting the homeland,’ where it explores the complex ways in which individuals in the field negotiate their relationships to Ireland, challenging romanticised or monolithic representations of Irishness. It highlights how diaspora and individual activities not only contribute to Ireland’s visibility but also actively engage in shaping, contesting, and redefining perceptions of Ireland. It calls for a nuanced understanding of belonging, representation, and identity politics within the global Irish community.
