Irish Diaspora: “They are Part of Us”

Investigating the notion of the Irish diaspora, this chapter critically examines its conceptualisation and highlights the complexities of identity for those considered to be ‘Irish abroad.’ Using an illustrative example from the fieldwork as a heuristic device, the text cracks open the dichotomy between the diaspora and Ireland, scrutinizing how these categories are constructed and navigated by individuals and institutions. Through a discussion on scholarly engagement with and public narratives surrounding the concept of diaspora, particularly in the Irish context, as well as the impact of global crises on diasporic identities, the chapter sheds light on the fluid and multifaceted nature of what is means to ‘be Irish’ abroad. It underscores the role of crises in intensifying engagement with notions of identity, belonging, and ‘home.’
