Agile ICT Solutions for Responsible Mining: A Framework for Monitoring and Evaluating Sustainable Resource Management

Mining has been a crucial industry for human civilization for thousands of years. Over time, mining has evolved into a critical industry which fuels modern society by providing the raw materials necessary for a wide range of products and technologies. In the Philippines, the Caraga Region is well-known for its rich natural resources, particularly its mineral reserves. The Caraga region, which covers 50,130.93 hectares of mineral land, has gained recognition as the mining hub of the country, constituting 2.33% of its total land area. Mining operations are monitored by the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) that allows the transport of mineral ores. However, the agency is challenged with this procedure because of their lack of manpower to conduct validation and assessment, plus the bulk of applications and processing overwhelms the agency. ICT4RM aims to harness Information and Communication Technology (ICT) solutions to enhance responsible mining practices through efficient monitoring and evaluation of mining resources. The project adopted an Agile Framework to ensure flexibility, adaptability, and iterative development throughout its implementation. Key objectives included real-time monitoring and evaluation, promotion of responsible mining practices, stakeholder engagement, and Agile-based development. By integrating ICT tools and methodologies, the project sought to increase transparency, accountability, and sustainability in the mining sector. The outcomes included improved understanding and management of mining activities, compliance with environmental regulations, effective stakeholder engagement, and the ability to adapt to changing industry requirements. The project's success calls for scalability, continuous improvement, data security measures, capacity building, and collaboration with industry experts to further advance responsible mining practices globally.
