Development of Character Costume Symbolism in Animation Folklore: A Systematic Review

The role of costumes in conveying the symbolic meaning of characters through applied elements in film is crucial. However, a noticeable gap exists in the systematic assessment of the creative process concerning the symbolism of folklore characters’ costumes in animation films. Consequently, this study undertook a systematic review to explore the definition of symbolism in characters’ costumes and the elements utilized in conveying this symbolism. The results of the review identified 15 relevant articles across three databases: Scopus, Google Scholar, and Sage. Furthermore, this study comprehensively delineated the definition and elements of symbolism associated with characters’ costumes. The implications of the findings from this study are significant, offering valuable insights that can be applied in the creative process as a guideline for character development in animation.
