The Role of Social Media in Raising Awareness of Cybersecurity Risks

The study aimed to know the role of social media (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, and Snapchat). In educating citizens about the risks of cybersecurity, (individual risks, corporate risks, financial risks, malware, phishing attacks, distributed denial of service, zero-day exploitation, social engineering). Explaining the role of these methods and the extent of their impact on these risks, the study applied the descriptive analytical approach and the SPSS, a specialized questionnaire was design to collect the opinions of the study sample on its subject. (160) questionnaires were distributed to an appropriate sample of the study population represented by citizens in Jordan, and (160) questionnaires were retrieved, meaning (100%) of the total questionnaires distributed, and after examining the retrieved questionnaires, it was found that they were all suitable for the necessary statistical treatments. The study showed a set of results, the most important of which was the presence of a statistically significant impact of social media on educating citizens in Jordan about the dangers of cybersecurity. The study also showed that Facebook is the most powerful means of social media that it was study in the process of educating citizens, while YouTube was the least effective means in the awareness process. The study showed that cybersecurity risks (individual risks, corporate risks, phishing attacks, malware). Had a high role in being affect by social media in Educating Jordanian citizens about the dangers of cybersecurity, while the risks (zero-day exploitation, distributed denial of service, social engineering, financial risks) had a moderate role in being affect by social media, and in general, the role of social media was distribute between a medium and high degree. Accordingly, the study presented a set of recommendations, the most important of which are raising the level of interest in social media in general in the process of educating citizens about the dangers of cybersecurity. Raising the level of preparedness of Jordanian citizens with regard to maintaining their individual security, and uniting Arab and international countries in the field of combating electronic attacks and strengthening the system.
