The compilation of 20 chapters within this handbook puts forward a range of mental health issues, challenges, and opportunities for further development of mental health services in the Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) context. The contributions are from a range of practitioners, almost all of whom, work within Sub-Saharan Africa. The chapters emphasise the foundational role of culture and context in assessing the mental health needs of local populations, describe a range of innovative models to address mental health with limited resources, and identify systemic challenges for the mental health care sector. Four themes emerged across contributions: culture and context, the development of innovative models against a background of limited resources, systemic challenges, and future directions. Authors advocate for enhancing local knowledge and SSA-led solutions to mental health challenges.
