Nutrient Contamination in Water

Since a few decades ago, antipollution laws and regulations have been increasingly successful in reducing the amount of harmful industrial waste that enters our waterways. But due to improper participation from everyone, these initiatives are failing to reach their intended goal. In some instances, it has been seen that municipalities and industrial enterprises are also discharging untreated factory effluent into water bodies like rivers and ponds, despite best efforts not to do so. Untreated effluent discharge from industrial, municipal, agricultural sites, as well as urban runoff, is causing a significant loss in the nutritive qualities of water supplies and soil. Our municipal companies are unable to curb the influx of nitrogen, carbon, phosphorus, and many other nutrients from urban sewage into the water bays. A natural process called eutrophication uses an excessive amount of inorganic nutrients like nitrogen and phosphorus to accelerate the production of plants including seagrass and algae. The biggest issues in many coastal waterways are the sharp rises in C, N, and P. The development of hazardous algae, eutrophication, creation of dead zones, demise of aquatic life, water pollution, and destruction of marine ecosystems are only a few of the issues that are due to nutritional contamination in water.
