The cases featured in this section highlight some significant diseases and pathogens that are infrequently observed in humans. Although not commonly seen, it is important for the clinician to be aware of the signs and symptoms associated with these infections and for the clinical laboratory to be prepared with the proper diagnostic tools to identify the causative agents. Each case includes the clinical presentation, differential diagnosis, relevant laboratory findings, and a discussion pertinent to the pathogen identified and a brief review of other potential etiologies for the clinical syndrome described.
