摘要

This chapter describes in detail the Enabling phase of the Production-Oriented Approach (POA) by introducing the concept of “alignment” through the metaphor of a child learning to walk. This chapter builds on the five criteria outlined in Chap. 5 , emphasising that alignment is crucial for both a child’s first steps and the Enabling phase in EFL instruction. Alignment refers to the seamless coordination of teaching activities with learning objectives and the specific challenges faced by students, ensuring that every instructional action is purposeful and collectively aimed at achieving desired learning outcomes. The chapter explores how alignment guides the five criteria of the Enabling phase, ensuring that activities not only engage students but also progressively lead them towards independence, reducing their reliance on teacher support. Common problems encountered during this phase are identified, such as misalignment between activities and learning objectives, and solutions are proposed to optimise the Enabling process. By thoroughly examining the principle of alignment and its application, this chapter provides a comprehensive understanding of how to effectively implement the Enabling phase, ultimately enhancing the overall learning experience for students.
