摘要

This chapter provides an in-depth overview of the Production-Oriented Approach (POA) framework, detailing its three core components: teaching principles, teaching hypotheses, and teaching procedures. These elements are interrelated and function cohesively to enhance English as a Foreign Language (EFL) instruction. The teaching principles include four key ones: Learning-Centred Principle (LCP), Input-Output-Integrated Principle (IOIP), Cultural Exchange Principle (CEP), and Key Competencies Principle (KCP). These principles emphasise the importance of learning outcomes, the integration of input and output, cultural enrichment, and the development of comprehensive competencies in students. The teaching hypotheses consist of the Output-Driven Hypothesis (ODH), Input-Enabled Hypothesis (IEH), Selective-Learning Hypothesis (SLH), and Assessment-Being-Learning Hypothesis (ABLH). These hypotheses guide the pedagogical approach by prioritising output before input, linking input to output, facilitating selective processing of new input, and intertwining assessment with learning. The teaching procedures involve a cyclic process of Motivating, Enabling, and Assessing. This process is designed to create a coherent learning experience through mini-projects and scaffolded activities, with continuous instant formative assessment (IFA) and delayed formative assessment (DFA) integrated throughout. Detailed implementation strategies for each phase are explored in subsequent chapters, while Chap. 9 provides a comprehensive illustration of the entire teaching process with practical examples from the POA framework.
