Reconsidering the POA
摘要
This chapter provides a critical reassessment of the Production-Oriented Approach (POA) within the evolving landscape of education and society. The chapter begins by affirming the proven benefits of the POA in overcoming “dumb English” and enhancing teaching efficiency. However, it emphasises the dynamic and complex nature of foreign language teaching, which must evolve to meet the diverse needs of students and the rapid changes in society. The chapter addresses three key issues: the integration of the POA with other pedagogical approaches, the need for expanded research to diversify the POA’s application, and the adaptation of the POA to the era of artificial intelligence (AI). It argues for a harmonious blending of the POA with various language teaching methodologies to enrich educational practices rather than diminish them. The author calls for further research to adapt the POA to different languages, learner profiles, and teaching contexts, enhancing its flexibility and effectiveness. A significant focus is placed on modernising the POA for the digital age, prioritising interactive speaking and action strategies. The chapter provides guidance on integrating AI into all phases of the POA, highlighting its potential to enhance teaching methods while acknowledging the challenges and limitations of AI. This balanced examination encourages a forward-looking approach, urging educators and researchers to use AI judiciously to maintain the relevance and effectiveness of the POA in meeting the needs of contemporary learners. The discussion concludes by summarising the benefits and potential pitfalls of integrating AI into the POA, setting the stage for broader debates in educational technology.
