A Comparison of the POA with TBLT and PBL

  • Qiufang Wen

摘要

This chapter provides a detailed comparison of the Production-Oriented Approach (POA) with Task-Based Language Teaching (TBLT) and Project-Based Learning (PBL), addressing common questions from Chinese English teachers and international researchers. The chapter begins by explaining why the distinction between the POA and TBLT is a primary concern for Chinese educators, given the widespread familiarity with TBLT since its introduction in the early twenty-first century. In contrast, PBL is relatively new to English instruction in China, primarily known in fields like medicine and engineering. The chapter outlines the similarities among the POA, TBLT, and PBL, noting their shared focus on communicative teaching and experiential learning. It then emphasises the differences, highlighting that while all three approaches share common principles, they diverge in terms of “project” definitions, teaching procedures, and the roles of teachers and students. PBL projects, characterised by process-product dual orientation and extended duration claimed by some researchers, differ from the POA’s textbook-bound, theme-guided, and scenario-based projects. Teaching procedures in PBL involve student autonomy and research processes, whereas the POA follows cycles of Motivating-Enabling-Assessing, with structured engagement guided by the curriculum. The roles of students and teachers also differ, with PBL students taking on more independent, research-oriented roles, while the POA students follow a more structured path laid out by instructors. In conclusion, this chapter clarifies the contextual adaptability and pedagogical implications of the POA in the Chinese educational landscape, emphasising its development to address specific needs in Chinese EFL instruction.
